Root Canal Symptoms
“Root Canal” refers to the area inside of the tooth, where the tooth pulp and nerves are located. A tooth in need of a root canal will be deeply affected by tooth decay or nerve damage. Common symptoms may include:
- Tooth pain
- Tooth sensitivity
- Bleeding gums or gum soreness
About the Root Canal Procedure
Dr. Van Gurp provide comfortable treatment for root canal therapy in our Charlotte dental office.
Dr. Van Gurp will access the root canal through a small hole. He will remove any infected tissue and/or damaged nerve. Next, the tooth chamber is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Dr. Van Gurp may temporarily seal the tooth to keep out food and saliva until the next appointment.
Once the infection is clear, Dr. Van Gurp will fill the tooth with a biocompatible rubber compound called gutta percha. Then, he will cover the tooth with either a dental filling or tooth cap to add strength and protect it from future damage.
Root Canal FAQs
Does a root canal hurt?
Most of the pain associated with a 'root canal' comes from the infection inside the tooth. The root canal procedure will relieve tooth pain and start the healing process.
What if I don't have the root canal treatment?
A tooth extraction is an alternative to the root canal procedure. When considering a root canal vs. extraction, it is important to remember that once a tooth is lost, the replacement options typically become more difficult and complicated.
If an extraction is the ultimate choice, Dr. Van Gurp can replace the missing tooth with dental implants, a dental bridge or dentures.
How much does a root canal cost?
The cost of root canal procedures depends on your specific circumstances. Most dental insurance carriers will pay for part of all of the cost of a root canal procedure. Dr. Van Gurp accepts nearly all dental insurance and we will take care of all the necessary paperwork and billing to help you maximize your benefits.
