Dental Crowns An Overview
In the hands of a skilled dentist, a dental crown restores beauty and strength to a tooth that has been weakened by decay, injury or a root canal. Possessing that skill and artistry, Charlotte, NC Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Richard Van Gurp custom fits and shapes each all-porcelain crown. Unlike years past, these crowns have the look and feel of natural teeth. Once complete, the result is a natural smile that is strong and healthy.
Porcelain crowns are used in a number of cosmetic and restorative dentistry treatments including:
- Teeth weakened by large metal fillings
- Severely discolored or misshapen teeth
- Teeth affected by tooth decay and large cavities
- Cracked teeth, chipped teeth or teeth affected by other trauma
- To cover a dental implant
Dental Crowns What to Expect
The traditional dental crown process will require a couple of visits to our Charlotte dentist office. The first step is to prepare the tooth to be treated by removing the decay or damaged structure to allow for a secure and stable fit. Impressions will be taken to be sent to a dental lab for use in making your custom dental crown. In most cases a temporary crown will be placed for normal function and aesthetics.
Once the new restoration is ready, Dr. Van Gurp will permanently secure it to your prepared tooth and polish the new surface. Adjustments can be made for a comfortable bite.
Routine dental care and good oral hygiene will support the longevity and integrity of your dental crown for many years.
CEREC Same Day Crowns
Traditionally, it would require two or more visits to restore a tooth with a porcelain or gold cap. Dr. Van Gurp is pleased to be among a handful of Charlotte dentists using a new CAD/CAM technology called CEREC that allows for the immediate fabrication and placement of a dental crown. This means you only have to make one visit to the dentist office and don’t have to deal with messy impressions and uncomfortable temporary caps.
See Our Results
This patient came to our Charlotte dental office concerned that he was going to lose his teeth. He had severe gum and bite problems. Striving to keep his natural teeth, we began an aggressive gum therapy and corrected the bite issues. Once these areas were under control, we restored the teeth using porcelain dental crowns.
“From the time I entered your office to when I finished my treatment, the health and look of my teeth made a 180 degree turn for the better. Not only did you and your staff nurse my teeth and gums back to health, but you gave me an awesome smile that makes me proud.
