If I were to ask my adult patients what kills more Americans than anything else, I’m sure that most would know the answer – heart disease. It would surprise most people to know that numerous studies over the past decade have linked gum disease and heart disease. In one study, 91% of the participants with coronary artery disease also had periodontal (gum) disease. This is not to say that gum disease causes cardiovascular disease, but scientific studies continue to prove that there is a definite “mouth-body” connection that goes both ways.
The Perio – Cardio Connection
More and more research comes across my desk showing that periodontal disease increases the risk of heart attack or stroke and seems to influence the occurrence and severity of coronary artery disease. The link is the bacteria in the mouth that causes gum disease. When your gums bleed, not only is this blood from your body getting into your mouth, the bacteria from your mouth is getting into your body. It’s a two-way street! As this bacteria causes inflammation of your gums, it also settles in susceptible areas of your body, such as your heart and blood vessels – also causing inflammation.
If you are predisposed to cardiovascular disease and systemic disease, such as diabetes, poor oral health raises your risk for developing a health issue and can affect your ability to manage it well. Keeping your gums healthy plays a key role in both the maintenance of a stable, healthy smile and overall physical well being.
When we take care of the mouth, we take care of the heart and conversely, when we take care of the heart, we take care of the mouth.
