Preventive Dental Care An Overview

Regular brushing and flossing are essential elements in maintaining your oral health. Good dental hygiene also requires regular visits to the dentist for professional teeth cleanings and oral exams.

Richard Van Gurp, DDS is a Charlotte dentist with more than 20 years experience. Our office is conveniently located in the Belle Grove Office Park at the Arboretum in Charlotte, NC. We provide personalized dental care for patients founded on disease prevention and patient education, two key elements for successful dentistry and a lasting smile. Patient comfort is also an important part of our approach to your care and all members of our dental team will work to ensure that patients understand their dental treatment, feel relaxed and are provided with personalized oral hygiene advice for at home care.

Proactive Dentistry: Preventing Complex Problems

Attentive to the needs of his patients, Dr. Van Gurp listens to your concerns and reviews any problems identified by the hygienist. We look for signs of underlying, undiagnosed dental concerns that can have an impact on the longevity of your dentistry and the health of your smile.

By taking a proactive approach to your dental health, he is able to prevent future or more complex dental problems from occurring. His recommendations for your treatment address both your immediate dental issues as well as those problems that he has detected early – which offers the benefit of treatment that is much more conservative.

Preventive Dental Care What to Expect

Most patients will benefit from a bi-annual visit to the dentist. If you have health concerns such as periodontal disease, Dr. Van Gurp may recommend more frequent visits. Each visit will include a review of your medical history and dental concerns.

Dr. Van Gurp takes a comprehensive approach to dentistry. First, one of our hygienists will examine your teeth and gums, checking for any changes in your dental condition. Digital x-rays are taken when necessary, and the hygienist may also use the Diagnodent laser scanner to check the deep grooves of your teeth for early signs of cavities. Your dental therapy continues as your teeth are cleaned and polished.

Vizilite Oral Cancer Screening

As part of his focus on your oral health, Dr. Van Gurp will check your gums and the soft tissues of your mouth. Assisting in the detection of oral abnormalities is the Vizilite Oral Cancer Screening. Throughout every step of your hygiene visit, you can be confident that you are receiving the highest level of oral preventative care.

Preventive Dental Care FAQs

How often should I visit the dentist?

In accordance with ADA recommendations, we think that visiting with us twice a year is important for the long term maintenance of your dental health. Our preventive care visits are thorough and provide the opportunity for conservative treatment of dental problems in the early stages of development.

We also screen for larger health concerns with oral symptoms such as sleep apnea and oral cancer.

What type of tooth brush should I use?

There is a wide range of tooth brushes on the market and certain types can meet specific needs. If Dr. Van Gurp feels that a specific type of tooth brush is necessary for keeping your smile healthy between visits, he will make a personalized recommendation. We generally suggest a soft bristled tooth brush and can demonstrate effective brushing techniques.

What kind of toothpaste is best?

Dr. Van Gurp recommends a fluoride toothpaste that has the ADA seal of approval on the box or label.
